showing the peat stack. Peat has been a traditional source of fuel for heating and cooking over open fires. Today peat is still used throughout the highlands in new multi-fuel burners that can provide central heating as well as cooking facilities. It also has a beautiful aroma.

Peat would have been cut each year from a nearby peat bog and left to dry. It would then have been collected and moved nearer to the croft where it would stacked and used for the fire. Often the open fire would have also been used for cooking.
